So the end of the year is always exceptionally hectic so I apologize that I haven't been updating the blog more, but here's a quick onslaught of images captured at the end of 2011. As I'm putting this up here, I realized looking at them that while the style remains throughout them all, no two images are alike- not generic poses like some people might expect. That's what I LOVE most about my job, making each of my clients special, and truly capturing their unique personalities and memories.

These two cuties sure do love their daddy! And he's certainly one of the proudest dad's ever. The girls just modeled like its something they do all the time (hmm, perhaps they do have this sass all the time?!) Very fun session for all.

Free Session This Friday

Little man couldn't have been more cooperative. I think this may well have been the best newborn ever. He hardly flinched when we moved him and I think the whole session took around an hour (uh, yeah, seriously!) We got so many pictures of this little guy in a ton of poses, but this series of rockstar images is my favorite :)

This little guy is just a honey. He's got a special story too as just before he was born his grandma had a severe heart attack and ended up needing a transplant. She's doing wonderfully now and able to enjoy her first grandchild.

I feel like I've been waiting for this little gal to come almost as long as her parents. I've been photographing her big brother since he was a newborn, did maternity pictures for her, and now she's finally here!

I have to say, I have a super hard time getting these cute sleeping folded up pictures. I guess you wouldn't really notice it much because I really TRY at every session. But a newborn session usually takes hours, not just a quick in and out session over a lunch break. I've discovered that having a heated blanket on and warming the other blankets baby will lay on has made a big difference. Most people do have their house nice and warm for baby, but there's just something about helping baby feel warm and secure, even when they are laid down, that helps them relax.

New camera recommendations

I am often asked about recommendations for a new camera. I personally own two Canon SLRs and a Sony Cybershot. Here's a reply I recently sent a friend after she asked me what suggestions I have....

I tell everyone the same thing, buy the best one you can afford :) Its like a laptop computer, they usually are out of date before you can even take it out of the store and they are all basically the same but with extra bells and whistles. I prefer a point and shoot that does video, I find I use video more than still images quite often. I have had a Canon Elf in the past as well as a Sony Cybershot (currently) and really like both. The Sony has pretty dang good video. They are both super small (just a little bigger than a cell phone) so I keep mine in my purse most of the time. Some people prefer one that is a bit bigger so they can hold it more steady, but I already have a big SLR so I don't want a big point & shoot. I've never really looked at or compared those middle size cameras. If you want to be able to get fast shots, indoor sports/events, etc then I'd go with an SLR its really the only way to truely snap a picture and what you see is what you get without a delay. The downfall is they are bulky/heavy and usually cost quite a bit more. To get the most out of an SLR you will want to take the time to learn how to use manual settings as well. So, its all about what you want to invest, both in money and time. There really are not too many things cuter than a nearly naked baby wearing a super cute hat for pictures. I have hit the jackpot & found an up and coming babywear designer and have a TON of new hats for my sessions. Awesome part is they are super affordable and really good quality. SM Little Creations is based out of Casselton, ND and will custom make pretty much any thing you want.

There are hats, diaper covers, baby wraps, cocoons, onesies and t-shirts to match too! You can get them in almost any color. As I'm sure you may have noticed, I like to do volunteer work in our community. I also do a lot of donations to things like silent auctions and fundraisers, help out at various events, and of course donate my services. For the last four years I've been the Area Coordinator and Infant Remembrance Photographer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (http://www.nilmdts.org/) A couple years ago I was even selected as our area's only photographer to go to specialized education to be a certified trainer for that organization.

And, as if its not totally obvious, I really working with healthy babies! And to support healthy choices and healthy babies, I've been blessed enough to work with FirstChoice Clinic in Fargo for their annual Christmas card and other promotional pictures. Because its now well past Christmas, I'd like to share with you a few pictures from this past year's session.

Photoshop Quick Tip ~ Prairie Yarns

If you've ever met me in person and talked with me for any amount of time, you'd discover that I have an obsession with fiber arts. I'm talking knitting, crochet, spinning, and all other (wool) fiber goodness. I'm also what many might call a "yarn snob" in that I only use good quality stuff.

Well, in Fargo we are fortunate to have a couple nice yarn shops. One that I tend to visit most often is Prairie Yarns. When the owner asked me to take a few pictures of the new shop (they moved into a new site last fall) and of course I jumped at the opportunity to support another local business. She wanted a panoramic image and I didn't have enough space to just get it all in one shot; this required me to take several shots then compile them into one.

Here's the result-

To do this using Photoshop here are the steps:
1.) Shoot several overlapping images and get 'em on your computer (its best that they are all the same camera settings, so use manual settings on your SLR to ensure your color/shutter/aperture, etc. is consistent)
2.) In Photoshop, click on File --> Automate --> Photomerge
3.) A dialog box will show up and that's where you'll pick which images are going to be combined
4.) Wait patiently as Photoshop processes the files. If you only 3-4 it shouldn't take too long, but its does take some processing time.
5.) Once its done, THEN do your image adjustments for contrast, brightness, etc. so that the same setting is used for the whole image

Voila, thats it! Really, its that easy!

So, these pictures were taken the day before his due date, when he was three months old! Yeppers, this little man was born pretty early, but is entirely perfect :) Didn't score too many sleepy pictures, but it was really fun to have him in for his "newborn" session.

Photoshop Quick Tip ~ Family Vacation

This past winter our family went on a big vacation to DisneyWorld and on a cruise to Mexico. Of course, when we went it was a replay of a Lampoon's vacation, but we all had fun (even though it was C-O-L-D the whole time!) I did manage to get a couple shots of my daughter in the hot tub and my niece in the hotel room with my little Sony CyberShot camera that I thought were cute, but they needed some fixing up.

For both of these I followed the same steps.

1.) Open file then go to Image --> Adjustments --> Brightness and Contrast (Make adjustments to your liking.)
2.) Click OK then again Image --> Adjustments --> Photo Filter (Use the drop down and find one that makes your picture look better! Don't forget to adjust the density slider and see how that changes the image.)

That is all. Really, just two steps. Not too shabby, eh?

These two little beauties were so fantastic to work with. I had gotten to take pictures of them last fall as well and this time they proved again that they are just so well behaved and very photogenic :) We also got some super fun pictures with balloons, playing peek-a-boo, and family shots. Over the last few years I've looked at what customers were asking for and what people REALLY seem to want. When it comes down to it, most want a CD with their session images on it. Many photographers do not offer this or have high pricing on them because they want to retain rights to the images. I do agree with this practice but have found that it didn't quite fit with my business model so I've limited printing to proof size 4x6's for CD's in the past.

However, I've decided that I am going to start offering CD's with HIGH RESOLUTION print permission starting March 15, 2011! This will be included for all sessions. By printing your own pictures you will likely save money and its practical for me since I will have less backend processing/handling so I can spend more time with family. Printing will still be available through me, but I can also suggest places to print your own.

I'm also very pleased to announce that I will begin offering my digital design and editing services as well. You take the pictures, I do the editing! Watch for a special promo (i.e. FREE sample) to be posted soon to Facebook fans.

Without further ado- here's the new stuff!

Seriously, at six weeks old this little one has more big hair clips than she has hair- and she as a LOT of hair! So incredibly sweet, even if it took a little while for us to get her to sleep. We ended up getting some fantastic shots, here are just a couple quick previews :)

Here's a little guy we had to reschedule from last week. He was five weeks early and teeny to me, but his mom said he's already getting big :) It was wonderful to do a happy session after two NILMDTS sessions last week. I love seeing these little ones healthy at home!

And of course, big brother had to jump into one of the pictures, we weren't posed as I might have preferred, but I think this picture really captures the love mommy has for her boys!

Takin' a Rest

Here's a little snippet from a newborn session last week.

I'm glad I was able to get him in then because as of today I'm going to be taking a little bit of a rest for a few weeks. I found out that I have a pretty bad case of carpal tunnel which required injections and will have me in OT for a little while.

So sessions for the next two weeks will need to be rescheduled, if I have left a voicemail for you and you haven't rescheduled yet please give me a call! Otherwise, I can have Ben, Sara, or Shelly come out instead of me if you need to get in right away.

I do have classes scheduled with Moorhead Community Education for Photoshop & Digital Scrapbooking so if you're interested in those I there's still time to sign up! First class is this Thursday.

I seldom take time out specifically to take pictures of my own kids. However, I thought today might be a good day to try and get some for our own kids. Of course, being a typical mom and not really thinking like a photographer I tried to do everything all at once. Ran to get haircuts, then ran to the mall to get new outfits, quick lunch, then went to the park for pictures. Well, yes, thats a bit much for one day and expect the kids to sit still for pictures. My recommendation, do haircuts a few days before, go without the kids to the mall, and bring them for pictures right before lunch so you can use that as a bribe ;)

Anyway, we did get a few great pictures. We also got a lot of funny ones (click on the image to see it larger.) Here you go!!

Fall Family Mini-Sessions

I have a very busy schedule this fall but with the colors of the leaves and pretty nice weather we've been having, I wanted to open up a couple dates to get a few more families for their holiday pictures. These mini-sessions will be like my regular sessions but limited by time. They all include web gallery images in color, black & white, and vintage. And for the first time you'll also get a CD with your blog-ready proof images. I will probably also have one Saturday in November for more mini-sessions, but I'm sure the beautiful leaves will be gone by then. Call right away to get first pick of available times!

Little Joshua certain has his own personality and he is so absolutely loveable. As are his parents who dote on him endlessly. Oh, this little sweetie pie is only nine days old in these pictures. She was sound asleep then we moved her around just a bit too much, BUT it made for some absolutely fantastic wide awake pictures! What a cutie girl!

Oh yes, and as an FYI, this hat is another one of my designs, it was intended to have pompoms on it but I didn't get it finished yet LOL. If you're looking for cute hats like this let me know, they are super quick & easy to make!

This must have been one of my most favorite weddings I've photographed. This couple (their whole wedding party and all the family) were just so fun to be around, silly & relaxed, yet organized and totally unique. Their pastor did a wonderful service that was just perfect for these two. I really had a great time and their portraits turned out absolutely beautiful.

You can "pre-purchase" your cards now even if you're planning on a session later this fall if you want to take advantage of this discount but haven't had your session yet.

You'll want to order your Christmas & holiday cards early this year. I will be heading out to sunny Mexico in mid-December for family vacation so all card orders need to be in NO LATER THAN December 1st if you want them before I leave!

Cards can be on photo paper, art paper, and press printed folded or double-sided cards. Up to four images on most templates. Font & text is completely customizable! Choose one of these new 2010 templates and the $25 setup fee will be waived until November 5.

Clothing changes and all it only took about 20 minutes for this full session with cutie pie, Emmalee. I didn't even have to tell her to pose at all. She just did it all herself. Super cute!!! It was also pouring rain (when hasn't it been pouring rain lately?) so we stayed under the awning (depot on main ave) the whole time. She was super good.

Tips & Tricks ~ Workflow

While its important to try to get the best shot possible straight from the camera, a little post-processing is usually a good thing. I shoot in RAW then import using Adobe Lightroom. I do minor adjustments to exposure, color, contrast, and cropping from there. Then I will save the files in the .jpg format. I will then divide those jpg images into subfolders to decide which ones will get what type of advanced processing. If there are skin blemishes or backgrounds that need to be cloned I do that step next. I then use a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop called OnOne and run various conversions to finish up.

Hopefully you’ll find this info helpful! I know all the software I use is available for trial version downloads online. If you are a student or educator you may also qualify for an educational discount on Adobe products.

He was quite friendly & polite, but very shy so it took a bit of bribery and talking silly to get a few big smiles out. Here are some preview shots that I took. Babies babies, everywhere! The newborn babies are popping out a lot lately around here. Just an FYI, that I do schedule newborn sessions a bit differently than other sessions. First, I like to get them in within the first two weeks. If I'm able to get them in during that time, the session is free! Next, I schedule extra time for them including a tentative session the following day- just in case we get a crabby/sleepy/awake baby and don't get all the shots we hoped for. Finally, I come to your home. This is the biggest thing for new parents, no toting out every potential thing you may or may not need for pictures and dealing with the extra stress. I can bring backdrops, lighting, and whatever else you'd want for a traditional studio session right to you. All of this is included standard and there are no extra fees. You can take your time feeding baby, changing diapers, and picking last minute clothing changes.

My regular booking schedule is generally a couple weeks out- however, because I do cover a lot of NB sessions they are already accounted for in my schedule. In other words, its easier to get on my calendar if I know you’re due between x date and x date and want a newborn session that it is to get a family session scheduled. Another part of that, is most family sessions tend to be in evening/weekends because of work schedules. The bonus with babies is at least one parent is home full time for the first few weeks which makes it much easier for us to arrange a time to get together.

If you want to give me the heads up on your impending arrival, please just email or call me to let me know so I can be ready :) Also know, that I am one of the few lifestyle photographers in town that will also take pictures of your infants birth. A flat fee includes me at the hospital (or your home if you are having a homebirth) taking pictures throughout the wonderful event- and discreetly during times that are a bit more, well, yucky. I am also a trained doula having attended a number of births, so I can be there for labor support as well. Sound interested? Or maybe you just want more info on this crazy concept? So I’ve decided I get enough inquiries about how to get better pictures that I should post some tips and tricks once in a while. I will also be posting more on my FB page, so be sure to sign up as a fan so you can get more!
Here’s a picture taken this afternoon of my daughter. We were at Island Park and it was around 4pm (for those needing all the nitty gritty details!) She is sitting directly below a tree in a shadow. Ya have to be careful to see where the light is falling between the leaves to try to avoid those beams of bring light especially across the face. I’m using a Canon 40D with a Tamron 28-75mm lens and my settings are exposure 1/200 sec, f 4.5, ISO 200. The first picture shows my image straight out of the camera (SOOC) and the second is after a very mild edit. I shot the image in RAW format and imported it into Adobe Lightroom. Clicked “develop” then did an auto adjust. Then I chose the “direct positive” preset, played with the tone curve a teeny bit, cropped the image and added a slight vignette. The “editing” took about 10 seconds (literally.) Hopefully you’ll find some of this info informative.

Christmas is Coming!

Wow. The title just about says it all. Christmas is coming and very quickly! I do still have some availablity before my Christmas deadline of Dec 5th, so if you want to try to get in still give me a call!
